Orchestral String Sizing Guide

Violin & Viola

Measure your student's left arm, fully extended with the palm up, from the neck to the center of their palm.

Use the following chart to find the size:

16.75" - 18.5" = 1/8 Violin

18.5" - 20" = 1/4 Violin

20" - 21.5" = 1/2 Violin

21.5" - 23" = 3/4 Violin

23" and over = 4/4 Violin

18.5" - 20" = 11" Viola

20" - 21.5" = 12" Viola

21.5" - 23" = 13" Viola

23" - 25" = 14" Viola

25" - 25.5" = 15" Viola

25.5" - 26.5" = 15.5" Viola

26.5" - 27" = 16" Viola

27" and over = 16" or Larger Viola

Cello & String Bass

Measure your student's height, feet flat on the ground and chin straight, to the top of their head.

Use the following chart to find the size:

Under 3'6" = 1/8 Cello

3'6" - 4' = 1/4 Cello

4' - 4'6" = 1/2 Cello

4'6" - 5' = 3/4 Cello

5' and over = 4/4 Cello

3'6" - 4' = 1/8 Bass

4' - 4'6" = 1/4 Bass

4'6" - 5' = 1/2 Bass

5' and over = 3/4 Bass
